MEIS: Music Performance

Overview


Prepare for a variety of paths in the rapidly changing and diverse musical marketplace by establishing the solid foundation of general musicianship necessary for any professional endeavor. Focused on the development of performance skills in classical, jazz, commercial, and experimental music styles, this is the program for passionate and dedicated musicians.

Music Performance classes offer a unique education in current styles, interdisciplinary collaboration, and technology. Students can select a variety of specialized courses including small performance ensembles, lessons, theory, counterpoint, concert music, contemporary improvisation and analysis, and music history and literature. Gain work experience in musical performance through small ensembles, mentoring, clinics and workshops.

The Music Performance faculty is comprised of musicians who understand the importance of music’s application both in and outside of the classroom. The faculty’s active participation in their field ensures that students receive both a traditional and a cutting-edge education.

 

The Degree

Bachelor of Science in Music—Emphasis in Percussion and Drum Kit; Guitar and Bass; Piano; Wind and Strings; or Voice

This degree is designed for students who are interested in professional careers in music, including music composition and performance, recording, business and entertainment. Students can select classes that lead to local, regional and national careers in audio research, production companies, art administration and audio engineering—to name just a few.

Admissions

Admission to the Music and Entertainment Industry Studies (MEIS) Department is selective and competitive. The MEIS Department requires supplementary application materials in addition to the standard University of Colorado Denver application.

Jazz and Commercial Guitar at CU Denver

The Guitar Program at the University of Colorado Denver is one of the few music colleges in the country that offers jazz and commercial guitar as an degree emphasis. The guitar program is designed to provide all guitar students with the skills needed to become a proficient, viable and versatile musician in today’s diverse musical marketplace. Our guitar faculty is comprised of qualified, versatile, educated, energetic guitar instructors who are also working professionals skilled in teaching many musical styles including jazz, classical, world music, latin and rock.
